It is tempting to go the extra mile, to explore the unknown expanses, but the decision to still enjoy some of the beautiful pearls of our Adriatic Sea leaves me speechless at first and with the strong impression that I have everything I need at home 🙂
VIS – ISSA
If you want to escape, I suggest you spend your romantic trip on Vis Island, an oasis of peace, unspoiled nature, beautiful beaches and unforgettable culinary delights.
No matter what type you are, whether you want a relaxing or active holiday, Vis is an island that offers you all the options. Trekking along the goat paths of pebbles overlooking beautiful wild bays hidden by rocks and pines. Walking through the picturesque and beautiful Komiža, especially in the nighttime under the sky covered with stars. Cycling through Vis, renting a scooter and driving through fields covered with vineyards planted in the Greek time.
Stop! Taste! Wines! Dalmatian Traditional Cuisine! Feel it all! Don’t let any moment pass you by and try to memorize them as much as possible – the smell of the sea, pine trees, wind in your hair, the flavors of wine, anchovies, octopus under the bake, home-made fish in olive oil. Just push it!
Transportation

You will embark on a ferry from Split harbor on a two-hour drive to an island that has been an inaccessible military base for 50 years, and for the same reasons, today is an example of untouched nature. If you go for more days, a car is a great solution. The person one way ticket is 54,00 kn, while the car is 420 kn. One option, in my opinion, and the best way, is renting a scooter on the island. Prices range from 200-250,00 kn/day, and rides through old vineyards, sun rays on the skin, the scent of the sea and wind in your hair are unforgettable.
Authentic accommodation in Vis
There are two large towns on the island of Vis – Vis and Komiža. On AirBnb you can find beautiful rustic and ancient Dalmatian apartments and houses. Interesting Vis Accommodation can also be found at your local Adriagate agency in Split.
Personally, I’m always in Komiža. I love her. It’s kinder, smaller, more colorful. If you explore all its hidden corners, narrow city streets, old stone houses with typical Dalmatian wooden skeletons, visit its restaurants and taverns, drink coffee in the bustling main square in the bustle of tourists and locals, Komiža will be revealed to you in its full beauty and slowly tuck under your skin.
The ancient custom of burning a ship on Feast of St. Nicholas on December 6th in honor and protection of all ships sailing in Komiža is still preserved in Komiža to this day. This small, picturesque town with a long fishing tradition lies at the foot of Hum (587m). From the viewpoint on Hum view You stop at the beautiful Komiža and the islands of the Komiža archipelago – Bisevo, Brusnik, Jabuka, Sv. Andrew. Personally, I go there in the evening before sunset and enjoy the color and nirvana of a calming day with a glass of wine. Make sure your palate enjoys the taste of an excess of autochthonous white wine Vugava or black – Little Plavac. During my research, I was thrilled to learn that it was from the ancient Greek colony of ISSE that the culture of vine growing and wine drinking began in the Adriatic region for another 300 years B.C.
Palagruža also belongs to the Komiža archipelago. In mid-6 months, the Komi-Regatta “Route of Palagružon” is held with traditional Komiža ships / gadgets – called Falkusa. Palagruza is slightly less nautical miles away from Vis than from Monte Gargano in Italy, so it belongs to our beautiful country.
Gastronomic offer of Vis and Komiža
At Vis I had the opportunity to eat at expensive restaurants such as Barba and Bako in Komiža, Pojoda in Vis, but in the end you are most impressed by the small OPG crafts, where people with so much zeal and dedication try to give every tourist a sense of typical Dalmatian hospitality, try to make the food as good as possible and with as much love and heart as possible, so you can almost feel that devotion in the flavors of specific Dalmatian food. My recommendation goes without a doubt to OPG Belotovo in a small mist in the middle of the island of Vis called Marine Zemlje. There you will be greeted by a couple of tables in the garden, a peaceful and cozy atmosphere, superbly prepared food and unforgettable energy and a broad smile from the owner, Mrs. Ines.

Paradižot with Mrs. Ines – Dalmatian specialty of 6 eggs (egg whites and egg yolks), milk and Pettit Beurre biscuits served optimally cooled in the summer heat will be a striking memory of your island gastronomic experience. While in Komiža, a confectionery Cukar is an unavoidable station. Once upon a time, a lady, now a small team, makes delicious homemade cakes and cakes with ingredients from the island – almonds, lemons, lavender, oranges. Cakes with almonds, chocolate, and homemade orange liqueur have been a long time coming. Neither will you! hehehe 🙂
The best combination of food and wine: Grilled squid and vegetables with olive oil with a glass of Vugava – a surplus indigenous white wine variety
An indispensable specialty: An octopus baked octopus with seven types of vegetables, drizzled with olive oil and white wine a couple of times during baking to get the perfect juiciness.
Beaches of Vis Island
Stiniva, Stončica, Srebrena, Tepluš, Zaglav, Milna – these are all beautiful, more or less accessible beaches of Vis Island. Stiniva Beach was named the 2016 most beautiful European beach in 2016. I suggest a 20-30 minute descent in adequate footwear. It’s a steep goat road, but when you finally see a small, hidden pebble beach hidden by rocks and pines from the sea and people, all the effort is justified. This magnificent creation of nature leaves me speechless and enthusiastic every time from the beginning.
Srebrena – the beach, featuring thick pine trees, large rocky pebbles and a pair of shades of blue, green and blue. It’s wonderful, especially in the mornings where you can literally see the transition lines of these relaxing and calming colors reflected in the crystalline and clear sea.
Milna je pješčana plaža u istoimenom naselju gdje se možete zabaviti različitim sea adventure aktivnostima kao vožnja SUP-om / stand up paddle-om do prekrasnog otočića Budihovca ili do otoka Ravnika da vidite Zelenu špilju. A možete se ohrabriti i uhvatiti u koštac s kondicijom i vjetrom pa iznajmiti opremu i trenera za Windsurf.
From Milna, you can reach the sandy Zaglav beach by a 15-minute walk. It is recommended that you sit in a beach restaurant/cafe and enjoy the view, peace and quiet and taste the traditional Komiža cake with tomatoes, salty anchovies, onions, and capers. The nobles always emphasize that there are a surplus and Komiža cake! The difference is that the surplus cake is cut into triangles, and the Komiža into cubes and the tomatoes do not go in excess !! In any case, a specialty that must not be overlooked !!
Excursions from the Island of Vis
The excursion you must take is the Blue Cave of Biševo Island. The Island of Vis and Biševo Due to their geomorphological structure, they are rich in caves, and one of the most beautiful in the entire Adriatic along the one on the island of Capri near Naples is the Blue Cave on Biševo. And it really is. The intense blue color that illuminates the cave, best for 11-12 hours, because then the sun’s rays are most strongly reflected through the submarine hatch, it gives the impression that you are in a fairy tale and clearly tells you to witness a unique natural phenomenon.
It is only since 1884 that there is a small exterior entrance where tourist boats pass, but only when the sea is calm and the aperture is sufficiently walkable, so you must also pay attention if you have a visit to the Blue Cave on the MUST TO list.
Možda Vas povijest ne zanima, ali Vis je ostao pošteđen turističke izgradnje i ljetne komercijalizacije upravo jer je do 1992. bio vojni objekt jugoslavenske armije. Do Titove špilje vodi kozji put i 299 stepenica, koje bez reklame i dalje posjećuju mnogobrojni, rijetko slučajni prolaznici nebi li vidjeli gdje se Tito sklonio nakon desanta na Drvar i odakle je od 7.lipnja 1944. do kraja listopada davao naredbe kao vrhovni komandant Narodne oslobodilačke vojske i Narodnog komiteta oslobađanja Jugoslavije.

City of Vis is probably the oldest town on the Croatian soil. Due to its strategically important and ideally isolated area, it was inhabited by ancient Greek colonists from Sicily / Syracuse in the 4th century BC, calling it Issa.
The ideal way to tour the town of Vis is rent a bike and drive from the Czech villa from one end to the Fort George King III Fortress at the other end of the bay.
